Allow indirect proxy classes to implement their own functions

Newer proxy types will need to have a way to create their own sockets,
so move this out to its own function to allow that later.

The ASN.1 decoding routines were not accounting for keys that needed
long-form length encoding. Amend the code to add long form length.
